Act I · Who

A body that speaks where words are not allowed

Wasu Wanrayangkoon is a Bangkok-based theatre maker working in physical theatre, pantomime, clown and puppetry, with more than fifteen years of professional practice. He has been a member of B-Floor Theatre since 2012, a company known for socially engaged work that supports democracy, and has performed with them in Tokyo and Seoul. Since 2009 he has been an actor and director with Konnakhao Mime, Thailand’s white-face mime company founded in 1984.

His recent work deals with memory, exile and freedom of expression. In Untold Story (ไกลบ้าน) he uses puppetry and documentary material to tell the story of his father, the writer and Sriburapha Award laureate Wat Wanlayangkoon, who went into exile after the 2014 coup and died in Paris in 2022.

He is a fellow of Mekong Cultural Hub and a festival producer: he directed the KonRak Mime Festival 2018 and produces Puppet Slam in Bangkok, an annual festival of contemporary puppetry. He also leads storytelling workshops that draw stories from objects, letters and life maps.

Finding the story inside an object

Wasu leading a storytelling workshop with migrant workers in Taiwan, participants seated in a circle
“River of Life” storytelling workshop with migrant workers, Taiwan residency

Documentary storytelling

Participants start from what they already own: an object, a letter, a map of their life. Together we turn these into short performances with puppetry and mime, so that a personal story can stand on stage without needing a script.

  • Objects & letters
  • Life maps
  • Puppetry
  • Mime

Theatre of the Oppressed

Schooled in Augusto Boal’s techniques, Wasu uses theatre as a rehearsal for change: games and image work that let communities look at power, censorship and everyday injustice, then try out other endings.

  • Image theatre
  • Forum theatre
  • Mime, clown & mask
